Better Beagling In our 30th year as a Hunting Beagle magazine, Better Beagling is for those people who support the beagle as a hunting hound. Published monthly, featured articles and stories deal with hunting, breeding, training, health care, conformation, noted beagler interviews, and more.
Hounds and Hunting Hounds and Hunting Magazine is published monthly by the Slike family and has been in existence since 1903. It contains nearly all AKC Beagle Field Trial Information, AKC Beagle Field Trial Results, and some various rabbit hunting articles. The magazine deals exclusively with AKC Beagle Field Trials and covers four of the five types: Brace, Small Pack, Gundog Brace, and Small Pack Option. This magazine does not have any coverage on AKC Large Pack Beagling or AKC Mid-West SPO which uses the fast-speed type of Beagles. This magazine is a good Beagling magazine, but you must be careful if purchasing a hound from one of its advertisers. The caution is because the Hounds & Hunting magazine has many hounds in it that are bred as AKC Brace and AKC Small Pack type trial hounds. In fact, the first half of this magazine is dedicated completely to the "walkie-talkie" AKC Brace Beagles which is one of the types of Beagles we feel are destroying the breed.

Blue Cap Beagles Years ago much hype was made of the Blue Cap influence. But, what are they talking about; I am sure many who used the term Blue Cap had no idea of its influence. The continuing reference to this strain has continued, probably due to the dramatic influence in played years ago. Some of the modern-day kennels were reputed to the closest bloodlines going back to the Blue Cap strain, but how close was it? - Donald A. Skinner, VMD, Beagles Unlimited
The Gay Hound Beginnings A quote taken from a letter that Frank Reese wrote to Mr. Willis McWilliams "8-22-95" "The pedigree you sent me carries the names of the greatest I ever saw run, including Foxhounds and coon hounds. Slide was the greatest I ever saw run. We always ran all day or all night and with a large pack of 16 or more, and no hound ever ran the entire race with her. She would not tongue old scent, and ran with the head up at all times. I was never very successful in my breeding program until I bred the Slide lines. Mickey's Gus was the greatest hound of his time and was bred almost the same as the pedigree you sent me. The sire of Gus was I think the best hound that Baker sired. The pedigree you sent me goes to Slide several more times than the 9 that you stated. I made crosses out all the way, shipping my bitches to show bred hounds that would run. When I bred to show champions from families not hunted, it resulted in failure. Baker, and his dam Fury, has more pure Blue Cap blood than any present hounds today." - Jimmy & Leslie Adams, Alpine Kennels
